Junior High SCHOOL LEarning Expectations
What Students Should Know In English Language Arts (ELA)
Read both fiction and nonfiction and analyze what the text says by citing evidence from the passage.
Adapt reading skills to move from answering simple questions about content and plot to reading longer, more complex texts that require gathering and analyzing information.
Determine the central idea of a text and summarize the key points.
Determine the meaning of unknown words in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings.
Organize information from multiple sources.
Identify information needed in order to solve a problem.
Demonstrate proficiency with the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Write an argumentative essay which not only gives information but also presents an argument with the PROS (supporting ideas) and CONS (opposing ideas) of an argumentative issue. The primary objective is to persuade people to change beliefs that many of them do not want to change.

What Students Should Know In Mathematics
7th Grade
Students in 7th grade math need to know how to: - perform operations with integers and rational numbers - simplify and create expressions and equations - find the area, surface area, and volume for geometric figures along with the area and circumference of a circle - create proportions - identify rational numbers on a number line - convert between percents, decimals, and fractions - understand complementary, supplementary, vertical, and adjacent angles - graph points on the coordinate plane - convert units of measurement - understand and use exponents - find the mean, median, mode, and range for given data - interpret data and graphs - understand and identify transformations - know the difference and identify experimental and theoretical probability - solve and graph inequalities - graph a line in slope intercept form |
8th Grade
Students in 8th grade math need to know how to: - perform operations with integers and rational numbers - simplify, create, and evaluate expressions and equations - find and understand solutions to linear equations - understand, identify, and graph transformations - find the distance between a set of points - work with rate of change - solve systems of equations - identify linear trends - understand, identify, solve, and graph functions - find and graph solutions for polynomials and quadratics - find the area, surface area, and volume for geometric figures along with the area and circumference of a circle - understand complementary, supplementary, vertical, and adjacent angles - graph points on the coordinate plane - convert units of measurement - understand and use exponents and scientific notation - find the mean, median, mode, and range for given data - interpret data and graphs - solve and graph inequalities - graph a line in slope intercept form |
